About the seminar

When SDI was introduced, more than three decades ago, the introduction of digital video was resisted by many. They said ‘we don’t need it, what we’ve got is good enough’. At that time HD was only ‘a twinkle in the eye’ of a few people. SDI evolved – first to 3G-SDI then 12G-SDI. At each stage, some said ‘we don’t need it, what we’ve got is good enough’.

Ultimately the events industry followed where the studios led, and digital video, in all its glory, became part of our way of life.

We are hearing that phrase once again – in the context of streaming video across IP networks – the apparent successor to SDI over coaxial cable. The difference this time is that we are all streaming at home, and on the train, and in the sports stadium, and yet saying ‘we don’t need it’ at work. At least some people are.

The studios have already started to make their move to IP. And they are moving fast. Will we follow? Is the precedent strong enough? Are the advantages strong enough?

This session delves into the advantages, and disadvantages, of AVoverIP, and highlights a suite of published standards and open specifications, IPMX. An open standard that unlike the previous video transport approaches addresses the differing needs of multiple user scenarios.
